A Note From The Rally Master:

Thank you all again for coming. In the last couple years NoBM has become a real success with 19 cars this year and 24 last. If Kristen had been able to bring the whole Tabor clan and two of our absolute regulars had not been out of town, we would have bumped that 24 car number yet again. As a Rally Master I feel that is the perfect size for an event such as ours. It is great to see the number of Oregon and B.C. teams that we have. I like to believe that the Pacific Coast Challenge has something to do with this and that it too will succeed.

A couple of items from the event. I was distressed to see what the county work crew had done to the intersection at NRI 26. I suppose it's inevitable that some of the alpines or references get changed between the checkout and the event. For all of you for next year, remember that the mileage prevails. The mileage for that intersection was 5.31 so if you got as far as 5.40 or so, you should have realized you went too far. Now, having said that, I also realize that we all must rely on the alpines being correct and I will continue to try my very best to be more accurate next year. I had a couple other alpines pointed out to me with suggested corrections.

The mistaken time for the end of Section 11: Rocky Road Regularity was due to a speed change that was in the TSD but not in the instructions. As such we lost the control on that section and had a incorrectly short end time. This was not a trap, just a big mistake. The result was if you ended the section and then traveled exactly 30.5 MPH through the Monte Carlo, you arrived at the end of the section too soon. Now, in my own defense, you should use the Start Car #0 time to start a section, not a calculated section time. That's really just a cop out to try to smooth over the really painful part of my mistake. The control at the end of Section 12, the Green River Monte Carlo (listed as C1 above). I tried in the drivers meeting to explain how the Monte's would be scored. I seemed to have failed. Teams that I know should know better, or at least are much better that to have actually been 20 seconds or so late to a section start bought most of their score on that one control. The reason for the control was to catch anyone who was late on the Monte Carlo. Instead I just messed stuff up. The obvious impact of that control tells me the following: DON'T EVERY TO THAT AGAIN. You have my word on it. From now one, Monte's will be like Section 4: Gravel Dash Monte Carlo that ended with a Regularity section and a quick checkpoint. If you're late in the Monte, you're late to the control and that's the score.

OK, enough self whipping. Many of you left comment sheets. Thanks, they really help. Looks like I am right in the groove with this event. I have 2 reports of speeds too fast and 6 reports of speeds too slow. I got 3 'rally was too short' suggestions and I agree with you there. I would have liked one more hour myself. A couple of teams (obviously drivers :-) stated the Monte times were too long, and a couple teams (obviously navigators :-) thought they were too short. No one who bothered to turn in a form gave any indication that these were a problem, just suggestions. In general this spread across a dozen cars makes it look like I will make next years event about on par with this one. If you feel strongy that I have missed something please click the e-mail address at the bottom of the page and let me hear from you. One comment that I just hadn't though about is catering to our friends from Up North. They want a column for Kilometers. They do it for us, why shouldn't we do it for them. Be looking for that next year (Official mileage will still be in miles).

Thanks again and happy rally,

Greg Hightower
