Oregon 1000 recap

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Pics are on my Flickr page The Oregon 1000 rally was loads of fun. I have to add a caveat to what I used to say about paved rallies. This one was far from boring. Incredible roads with very brisk speeds, and a complete lack of the event “lawyering” observed on previous SCCA events. While we didn’t bring home any hardware, the memories from the trip are worth more. Yes that sounds trite, but this event was well worth the effort invested — more so than many other rallies I’ve experienced. and nabbed second overall and second in Equipped class. Steve Perret and Kathryn Hansen were the remaining WA entries. Hans and I were the remaining Equipped entry and got third overall. Our own timing error had us get max points on a leg and put us out of the running for first place. However on the third day we managed to repeat day one’s score, except with twice as many checkpoints, so we experienced excellent progress. Congrats to the winners: Stock (Paper/SOP) Class: Paul Eklund, Kala Rounds, R.

Oregon 1000 Day One

Hans and I are doing the Oregon 1000 SCCA rally. We’re sitting in second overall, four points behind April Smith and Marcus Song in the Mitsubishi Outlander that we’ll be seeing on Alcan. Should be getting a few good whoops and hollers on the jet boat today.

Had a small adventure tonight. There I was, on a dark cul de sac, in the rain, too far from my car with two black Mastiffs charging out the gate at me. I glanced at the car — could I get on top of it? I looked back at the dogs and realized that hell, it didn’t matter. Those menacing looking creatures could easily leap to the Saab roof if they wanted to. Last week I saw on craigslist that a guy was parting out a Saab. In the eternal search for seats that don’t suck, I contacted him about what he had. .

Hans and Dan don’t have as much experience working together as some of the more venerable TeamD pairings. In preparation for Alcan 2008, they figured to do as many events together as possible in 2007 to get Hans picking up some Timewise skills, and for Dan to remember how to drive. in October, where we should be seeing all the TeamD regulars making an appearance.

More photos from Dan’s camera. These are shots from Day 8 (Ice Hotel), Day 9 (Big Lake Slalom and the awards) as well as some nice pics from the dash home.

Right now I’m hosting the pics on my web site. Perhaps we’ll consolidate them here soon. For now you can find them at http://www.comdens.com/rally/alcan/Alcan8-End/
