7!

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Usually a lucky number. Not so lucky when your clock is off by 7 seconds all day. Not lucky at all.

Our fault for not double-checking. That little error kicks us quite a way back in the pack. It’s the difference between 4th and 11th.

Soft ditch, easy off

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

On the final section with only 8km remaining Steve and Eric take a holiday from forward momentum.

Eric can describe what happen much better than I since we were parked before I knew why the snow was up to my window.

But basically we were stuck in a ditch for twenty minutes until a kind fellow ralllyist tugged us free.

The front spoiler might be a bit more bent and so might Eric’s ego. 🙂

We’re headed into Vernon, BC to finish the day up. No we hav to agree on whether it was an extra terrestrial or a phantom logging truck that knocked us into the ditch.

Where there’s water there’s mud

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Sections 2 and 3 saw mud and more mud. Bountiful challenges for both driver and navigator.

The slick mud, lubricated ice and twisty roads kept Eric on his toes and the ever changing surfaces kept me tweaking the computer to keep the mileages correct.

We’re headed into the “lunch” break with more than half of the rally day behind us.

Das BMW temperantakenstein says it’ 5.5C which is warm and tosty for this part of the world.

Transitting on to the next section.

50 Years and Counting

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Thunderbird Rally turns 50 this year. This is TeamD’s 7th T-Bird and if the decades that we missed are half as good as the last seven years then it’s half a century of awesome rallies.

At the rally HQ there is a display of Thunderbird memorabilia from years past. Rally plaques and plates are a long tradition in rallying. The display includes plaques going back to the 60’s and 70’s. Also there is a copy of the Rainier Auto Sports Club newsletter, the Wishbone Alley Gazette, from 1989 with some Thunderbird coverage.

We’re waiting for breakfast in Merritt and back at the hotel the parking lot is full of busy rally prep. Team McMillen and Crippen are off to a fine start. At the breakfast joint Jeff asked where his navigator was. Apparently he left Marvin at the hotel expecting him to catch a ride. The trip back to the hotel is short and both of them will be joining us shortly. The moral of the story is that you stick with the one you brought.

Signing off for now while breakfast is getting plated. Hopefully there will be some updates from the road.
